DESCRIPTION
RE-ENVISIONING THE SPACE AT ALICE: Beginning in
October 2006, the Gallery transitions from a Stationary exhibition
concept to focus on roving exhibitions and special events programming
in the downtown area. The Space at Alice was originally conceived
as a collaborative partnership between the Arts and Business Council
of Rhode Island and Cornish Associates when it opened in 2003. Intending
to fulfill a need in the downcity community, The Space at Alice
provided a means to unite the populations of artists, collectors,
and visitors interested in the contemporary visual art scene in
Providence.
At its home at 186 Union Street, which has housed the stationary
gallery concept for the last three years, The Space at Alice has
hosted thirty-five exhibitions and presented the work of one hundred
thirty-eight artists, selling over one hundred fifteen thousand
dollars in artwork to collectors. In adhering to the nonprofit vision
of the gallery, seventy-five percent of the total proceeds were
given to the individual artists.
“In light of Tazza’s imminent expansion, the departure
of co-founding director Francis Scire and the program restructuring
of the Arts and Business Council of Rhode Island (A&BC/RI),
The Space at Alice will look to adapt to these changes while still
serving the artistic needs of the Providence community.” Said
Peter Bramante, Executive Director of A&BC/RI.
In the coming months, The Space at Alice will continue to oversee
the Downcity Salon Exhibition currently installed at the Peerless
LOFTS as well host special events and site-specific exhibitions
in the area. Additionally, The Space at Alice will present a new
concept boutique, “Queen of Hearts,” located in a remolded,
downsized version of the 186 Union Street space. Queen of Hearts
will open in early October. The Space at AliceE is also available
as a community and/or private meeting space for special events.
