– Holiday Celebration
Dr. Deborah Johnson is Professor
of Art History, Women's Studies, and Black Studies at Providence
College, and former Director of the Providence College Women's Studies
Program. While Curator at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School
of Design, she published several catalogs in the areas of prints,
drawings, and photography, two of which won national awards. As
a modernist at Providence College, she has been nominated three
times for Providence College's Outstanding Teacher Award and has
continued to publish widely on 19th -21st century art and culture.
In addition to her inclusion in the landmark publication, 'Readings
in 19th Century Art' (Janis Tomlinson, ed.), her most recent books
include 'Women Making Art: Women in the Visual, Literary, and Performing
Arts Since 1960' and 'Seeing and Beyond: Essays on 18th-21st Century
Art in Honor of Kermit S. Champa,' both published by Peter Lang
International. We look forward to Johnson’s insights on the
local art scene.
The Rev. Jim Miller recently
served as the 35th minister of The First Baptist Church in America,
Providence, RI. The church was gathered by Roger Williams in 1638
marking it the first church established in Rhode Island. From 1991
to 2000, Rev. Miller was the Executive Minister of The Rhode Island
State Council of Churches.. Rev. Miller is recipient of The Walter
Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award presented in May, 2000. Walter
Cronkite, retired anchor of CBS-TV Evening News, presented the award
for courageous work in behalf of civility, tolerance, diversity
and cooperation in advancing public dialogue and action on controversial
and divisive issues. Miller gives leadership to numerous professional
and community organizations and we’re excited to have his
help, insight and energy as a part of Gallery Night Providence.
Christine Prescott is an
art teacher at Springfield Middle School in the Olneyville neighborhood
of Providence. She emphasizes the fine arts in her teaching and
will apply that perspective to a Gallery Night tour. A Rhode Island
native and former parishioner of Rev. Jim Miller, Prescott looks
forward to working with him on November’s Celebrity tour.
